The pyramid of Kukulcán is a temple pyramid in the ruined city of Chichén Itzá in the north of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico.

Kukulcán is a Mayan word for Quetzalcoatl, the quetzal snake, a syncretic deity known Mesoamerican cultures such as the Toltec, the Atztecs and the Maya.

In the equinox, this pyramid attains a special meaning.

When the sun sets (almost) exactly in the west on these days all over the world, then the shadow of the serpent seems to be winding down the steps of the pyramid - a glimpse of so many people pursuing until the darkness of the dawning night.
