The wonderful scenic route across the Valdresflye plateau is one of the 18 Norwegian Tourist Routes, which are maintained by the Norwegian State Roads Administration especially for tourism because of their picturesque landscape. There are parking and rest areas along the route and there are also vantage points at particularly impressive points.

We drove over the Valdresflye mountain plateau at the end of May because the road is closed in the winter months - the snow then piles up too much. Coming from the north on highway 257, you first pass through the village of Heidal and can take a break at its beautiful wooden church before continuing on federal highway 51 to the pass at 1,389 meters.

After fantastic views of the Jotunheimen National Park, it's back down to the Bygdin Lake, which was almost dry. The actual ferry and excursion boat lying on dry land is a curiosity in the rocky and unspoilt landscape.
