The Farol da Barra lighthouse is the highest in Portugal and one of the tallest in Europe. In Barra, where in addition to ancient fishing art, various water sports such as Kitesurfing can be practiced, the 19th century lighthouse rises more than 60m above sea level. Prior to its inauguration in 1893, ships from this area were frequently deceived because the land in the area is very flat and falsely gives the impression of being far away. Since its completion, the Farol da Barra lighthouse has been a safe guide in shipping, drawing attention to the approach to the port and the city of Aveiro.
