Oddities from my travel diaries

In Hawaii we often saw a bright red bird that kept thrilling us. When I found a red feather, it immediately went into the diary.

There are black lava beaches on Lanzarote and if you look closely and are lucky you can see small olive-colored stones: called olivine - also seen in my travel diary.

In New England there was something really strange for the diary. Jürgen had a little operation shortly before departure and the threads had to be pulled on vacation. The surgeon said he should go to a hospital to remove the sutures. But I found this completely unnecessary for midwives and removed them myself. Jürgen insisted on taking her with him. They then - well disinfected - went to the diary.

There are even three examples from my favorite travel destination. In Kyoto we did a geocaching tour through the forest. There were always beautiful views of the city. A Japanese hiker gave us a lecture about something we didn't understand and gave us a map with instructions on how to start a fire. Only in the hotel, where I looked at the sheet calmly to decide whether I would dispose of it immediately or later, did I understand what it was about. Around Kyoto you can see large characters on cleared areas on the mountain slopes. In August - as described on the sheet - wood piles are lit in the form of the characters and from the city you can see the burning characters. What I liked best was that although I can't read Japanese, I could understand everything. The fire signs can be seen at the Gozan no Okuribi Festival in Kyoto every August.

Karin and Jürgen and the Moomins

On our second trip, we visited a themed cafe in Fukuoka, which was all about the Moomin. Although the Moomins come from Finland, I found the café to be absolutely Japanese. Moomin films ran in an endless loop and the Moomin waffles tasted very good.

Finally you can see toothpicks stuck in small origami figures.
