You can reach the island from Portmagge in small motor boats, which transport a little more than 10 people - timely reservation is urgently needed. If the weather is bad, then the crossing becomes restless. But the bad weather also has advantages, because then the beehive huts in the fog seem even more impressive and the island shows a very different kind of population with many puffins (Fratercula arctica), for which fishing on rough seas in impossibel.
The rise is sometimes too difficult for one, so that e.g. two Americans on our tour preferred to wait at the safe pier while we made the ascent. But with the heavy Atlantic winds it was on the return even the braver visitors a bit queasy, so that the steep stairs were precaution, managed on the pants.
The island has a neighboring island called Little Skellig and you can see a large colony of elegant gannets (Morus bassanus) from the boat.
The island was a location for the films Star Wars: The Awakening of Power and Star Wars: The Last Jedi and served in it, for example. as a backdrop for the hiding place of Luke Skywalker, which can be seen on one of the following photos.
